Training in drive

Has anyone had a look at the training in drive package from K9 Pro? I have to admit that I'm pretty tmpted, from a competition point of view. I've seen some pretty amazing results from this. I wonder if it would be possible to do as a group, or even see what it would cost to get a workshop together?
Anyone else interested?

  2. Nic,

You know my answer without asking! A combination of clicker and drive training could produce a fantastic competition dog. One of the books I bought recently but haven't had a chance to read is "Shutzhund Obedience - Training In Drive." Dogwise says the book teaches you to "Have fun while training! This method gives your dog choices, then you simply reward him for making the correct choice. This gives him credit for being an intelligent, sensitive creature who enjoys working when we allow him to think for himself. This happy attitude assures your dog will work joyfully and correctly--in other words, he will love to work!! " Sound familiar!!

I started reading Clicker Training for Dogs by Karen Pryor last night. It is a good easy read and she is more open and flexible than I had expected so I am really enjoying the read. I will be interested to see if her ideas are modified in her later books. In this book she does refer to using negative reinforcers to control bad behaviour ie signals that an animal is not going to be reinforced for an unwanted behaviour. She also supports time outs for bad behaviour, but indicates these actions should be used for bad behaviour rather than routine training. I am not so much interested in these negative aspects but more the points she has about delaying clicks to extend the duration of behaviour such as sitting, and varying the length of time between clicks and the arrival of the treat. Karen says to treat sometimes immediately and sometimes a beat or two later - or toss a treat. This teaches a dog click means food is coming but may not come in the same place and may not come right away.

Happy to loan the book once I have read it twice!!

  3. Sounds good. I'm tempted to try and email him and see what a workshop woul cost, or whether we could do the distance package as a group.

  4. I am open minded but did note the ecollar reference on the website - the more I learn the more I know that any adversives just aren't the way. I'm not sure I'm at a point that I need help with the dogs - just a human physcologist for me!
