I am just messing around with uploads - 1 minute of video takes an hour to upload - nearly 90mb! I've missed the bit with Rosie just looking past the dumbell (avoidance) then dropping it on my foot - ouch!
I think I'll bring the vid on Saturday so watch out!
Ang, thanks for the video footage. I took particular note of how you were shaping Pepper to give you the dumbell when you put your hand out. You only clicked and treated when he got the dumbell close or into your hand,
ReplyDeleteI will try that technique with Charlie, as he is happy to bring the dubbell back to me, but just needs to learn to put it into my hand. I will also try sitting like you did, rather than have me towering above Charlie with my hand stuck out
Howdy - thanks for the comment - yes, he really wants to be chased and has a great inner turmoil. I have also started giving him another toy when I get the dumbbell and then chasing him - a 'premack' exchange! You can see I am still clicking even when he is just trying to get past me - now (session 3) there are no clicks for this anymore (shaping). I'd suggest even sit on the floor with Charlie to start - be as inviting as possible! Good luck :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Ange, I'll try sitting on the floor with Charlie and see if that helps. He is so skittish, and when he sees my hand, he becomes nervous and shuts down. Ah the challenges! I can't understand why he gets nervous at the sight of my hand, as that hand has only ever dispensed pats, cuddles, food and lots of love.
ReplyDeleteAre you doing any touch hand exercises - I would try some hand variations - maybe a closed fist for nose touch (exactely like teaching to touch the target stick), hand shake and wave - you want him to react to your hand like the box and target stick and the way to do that is make him 'work' the hand so it has good meaning. Charlie and Rosie would make a fine pair - she is only 'silly' when she has a toy :)
